What is the secret to getting higher SEO rankings?
It’s all about following the rules. But first, you need to know what the rules are. So here are 3 tips to help you become an SEO pro!

So let’s start with the first tip!
The Keyword Planner
To get the right keywords which will lead to higher rankings we need to use a tool provided by google called (keyword planner) and as I live in the Netherlands lets include the Dutch version (zoekwoordplanner).
Keyword Planner is a tool found in AdWords. So, of course, you will first need to sign up for an account with AdWords. This tool will provide us with strategic keywords as well as important information about how often these keywords are used. Once you are logged in to AdWords you will find on the top right-hand side a menu called tools and under tools, you can click on the keyword planner. The keyword planner should look like this….
Excellent now we have arrived at the keyword planner you will notice 3 choices.
- Find new keywords with a phrase, website or category: Allows you to type in a phrase, website, or category to generate new ideas.
- Data and trends in search volume: Shows the historical trending and search volume data of keywords
- Combine multiple keyword lists to get new keyword: Combines two separate lists that you’ll input to create new keyword combinations.
We want to click on the first link (Find new keywords with a phrase etc..) Then we will get a screen that looks like this!
Great you are doing well! So let’s run through this form.
The Keyword Planner Form
- First, you need to fill in your product or service or words you think are applicable. I used SEO.
- Second, we are asked to fill in a destination website or landing page. I used my website www.thekiwiconnection.nl
- Third, we need to choose a product category. I have chosen website development. Keep in mind you may need to search a few layers to find the right category for your product or services.
- Fourth, we have our target country. As I live in the Netherlands that is my choice. I have also included all languages and I am searching only in google.
- Fifth, If you need to you can add filters to adjust your search. I have just left these on the generic settings.
- Finally, the time period of the search. I have chosen a monthly average over 12 months.
Now we press the button! And hey presto you should now get a screen looking similar to this.
The Keyword Planner Results Page
So what is going on here?
Notice under the heading (Average monthly searches) we find a number. My results were 10k to 100k or 10,000 to 100,000. That means that my service (SEO) has been searched between the 10,000 and 100,000 times per month on Google within the Netherlands. Because remember that were the variables of my search. Under the heading competition, it says (normal) Adwords will define the word’s competition with a rating of low, normal and high. Because this doesn’t have a crazy amount of competition in the searches it’s price is valued at €3,00 per click.
To be honest, we aren’t really interested in the amount being paid we are interested in how Google rates this word or phrase. Is it low, normal or a high rating? Why is that important? Because in order to get higher rankings through organic searches (searches that come up in Google’s search engine but are not paid for) we need to know the search terms competition on the Internet.
- Low = not much competition within the Google searches but also means fewer people searched for it.
- Normal = reasonable amount of searches but the competition becomes harder.
- High = well I just stay away from high because it will have a lot of views and generally it is a lot more difficult to get higher rankings unless your landing page is perfectly constructed for SEO.
As you scroll through your searches you will see lots of different words or phrases with the rating from low to high and the amount it generally goes for with Adwords.
TIP: The information that is important to us is what is the competition rating (low, normal or high) in contrast to the number of times it is viewed.
Here is the secret SEO part you have been waiting for!
And now comes the part you generally won’t hear from SEO experts because it is their thunder!
The keywords you want to choose will be the keywords with low or normal behind it. For example, if you can find a keyword that has between 1k to 10k and it’s competition is low well you are on to a winner. The lower the rating or percent of the competition compared to the number of views will define your choice of keyword.
Let’s look at an example to clarify:
- (seo) has a normal rating 0,52% to be exact, but it is viewed between 10,000 times and 100,000 times. So your chance’s are higher with that keyword. However, if we could find a word that had just as much traffic or sat in the 10,000 range and it had a lower percentage like 10% then that would be even better! So the lower the percentage the better our chances are of ranking higher in the search engines because the competition of that keyword is lower.
- (e-commerce website) on the other hand is a (high) with a percent of 0,86% but only a viewing of 100 to 1000 times per month. Firstly it has a very high percentage meaning it has a lot of competition. However, the fact that it has a viewing of between 100-1000 views per month is a good start. So it is not only the percentage but also the number of views.
TIP: So if a keyword has a lower percentage of 0-30% and it has views between the 10-100 per month that is where we want to start. Our chances are best when we start with low viewings and low percentage. Then we work our way up by going to 100-1000 and then 1000-10000 views per month but we start where our chances are the highest (10-100) and then we move up the ladder as it were.
See how important it is to choose your keywords wisely! It really can make or break a website. Is it really that simple? Yup, it is that simple! I know because I have used this method many times and have many clients that are now on page 1 or 2 in Google for their websites.
So how did you go? Did you find some keywords that were low or normal but still had a rather high search rate? Then you have gained the insight into which keywords to use. Well done! Extra Tip: In Keyword Planner if you click on the download button you can download your results into an excel sheet. Handy for research! But what I like is that it will give you a competition rating in percent. I find this more accurate when gauging which keyword or phrase to use.
